A Newbie’s Guide to Injectable Fillers

Laugh lines, frown lines, wrinkles — despite all these marks on your face, you still used to believe in aging gracefully.

That is, until these lines started deepening and your skin became all the more looser and crinklier.

So you know it’s time to look up some alternatives. Just so you can at least look as old as you really are, not more!

Injectable Fillers — A Better Alternative

Injectable fillers or dermal fillers are perhaps one of the most popular choices for facial enhancement, aside from Botox. Completely safe (though only if you get your treatment from the right sources), dermal fillers are made from ingredients such as hyaluronic aid, collagen and calcium hydroxyl apatite. Those fillers include:

  • Juvederm
  • Radiesse
  • Restylane
  • Sculptra

And more!

What Can Dermal Filler Be Used For?

Typically, dermal fillers are used to treat any irregularities in one’s facial structure such as lines and wrinkles. Typically on a temporary basis (but on long-term), these injectables are either used to fill the hollow spaces in the skin, or plump and define areas. They usually work best:

  • To make veins (especially spider veins) look less prominent
  • To restore volume under the eyes
  • To restore volume in the cheeks or cheekbones
  • To give lips better definition and volume
  • To correct frown lines
  • To correct lines above the lip
  • To treat the melomental fold i.e. lines from the mouth to the chin
  • To treat the nasolabial fold i.e. lines from the nose to the mouth

What’s the Best Option?

HA Fillers — Juvederm, Restylane

Fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm use sterile gels that are made from hyaluronic acid. Probably one of the safest choices out there, these HA fillers are FDA approved and are favoured for areas such as the nasolabial fold and any off-label areas such as the cheeks or any other areas of one’s face.

This is calcium hydroxyl apatite filler which is meant to last longer than an HA filler. However, there are some cases in which Radiesse isn’t able to sustain its form for a longer period of time. Radiesse can also cause bumps if not correctly administered.

This is more of a volumizer than filler. A poly-lactic acid-based injectable, this filler is best for any facial hollowing that occurs in patients with a low body weight. Especially useful for people over 60, this volumizer gives a definitive shape to one’s facial structure. But again, it must be done by a professional in plastic surgery.
